CHAPTER 20

Utopia

JESSICA SHIVERED IN THE ARCTIC cold air and wrapped her coat tighter around her. David gave her the gloves out of his coat and pulled her hood up over her head before doing the same for himself. Their shoes crunched as they walked across the frozen snowy ground.

“Is it far?” Jessica’s toes were already getting cold in her thin flats.

David smiled and held his hand up to her head, gently rubbing his thumb across her temple. He motioned toward the direction they’d been walking. “Can you see it now?”

Her eyes grew wide as the camouflage seemed to melt away from top to bottom. She stared in awe. A transparent glow surrounded an atmosphere like a clear dome over the city.

They were almost there—only about a hundred feet to go. She recognized the buildings. They were the same rounded buildings she’d seen in the painting in the study of his house. She marveled at their beauty.

As they got closer, the buildings appeared to be made of not only the same silver metal she kept seeing in the Casdan technology, but of a combination of materials, with lots of earthly materials mixed in. There were wooden beams, stucco siding, bricks, marble, and glass windows. They embodied the blending of earth and Casdan cultures.

“How big is it? Do people live here?”

“It’s an entire city complex. There are several other spheres connected to it. You can’t see them right now, but they’re dedicated to the livestock and farming fields, and then the building, mechanics, and storage spheres are over there.” He pointed out the various areas to the right and left for each one.

“The main biosphere is a couple miles wide, holding about five thousand people. It’s actually one of our larger ones. This area was chosen because there are some unusually strong magnetic fields around here. We use the natural energy vortex to help propel our ships into outer space. It also allows for extremely accelerated time-space travel. From here, we can create what humans call a worm-hole. That’s why it’s one of the centers for off-world projects, as well as some of our more important governmental agencies here on Earth.”

“What? Five minutes is too slow?”

“It takes a lot longer than that to get to another solar system.” He chuckled. “And to answer your other question, yes. The people who work here also live here... or at least they live here part of the time. There are some who rotate around, like Steven. Some of the time, he’s in Denver, sometimes he’s in D.C., and sometimes he’s here. I’ve spent a lot of time here, myself. I had a residence here until last year, but I spend most of my time in Denver, now that I’m the director there.”

“So, there’s a PCIC office here?”

“Yeah. The head PCIC office is here, as well as security and home planetary missions. Politics and military, just like you guessed.”

“Is this your capital city?”

“No, the Central Casdan Council biosphere is off the coast of Florida. It’s one of two underwater spheres.
